Douglas MacLaren, M.Ac., C.Ac., received his Master of Acupuncture degree from the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA), the oldest and among the most prestigious acupuncture schools in the U.S.  He is certified by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure as well as the NCCAOM.  Douglas received his practical training through internships at Boston, Massachusetts area hospitals and family health centers, including Lemuel Shattuck Memorial Hospital, Winchester Hospital Family Health Center, Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center and the NESA clinic.  He also worked at NESA as a teaching assistant in Tui Na (Chinese bodywork) and the Japanese acupuncture program.

Although specializing in Chinese as well as Japanese Acupuncture, which is well known for its subtle and relatively painless needling approach, Douglas also frequently employs the Dr. Tan Balance Method and Biomedical Acupuncture, both of which he finds to be particularly effective in treating acute and chronic pain.  Along with these various styles of Acupuncture, Douglas emphasizes a holistic approach to wellness, founded on proper exercise, breathing, nutrition and food combining.  He also instructs patients in the practice of vocal toning for augmentation of treatment effects.

Douglas spent 6 years prior to Acupuncture graduate studies living in Japan, where he was an English instructor and the co-owner of the International English Conversation School (IEC), in Matsuyama City, Shikoku Prefecture.  Prior to his Japan experience, Douglas worked as a VISTA volunteer in Grand Junction, Colorado after graduating from Holy Cross College, in Massachusetts, with a Bachelor’s degree in History with an Asian Studies concentration.  His interests include meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi, Sound/Music Therapy and, most importantly, spending time with his wife and son.
